How Wildlife is protected

Elephants, hippos, monkeys and crocodiles roam freely in the area and part of EcoFarm’s responsibility is peaceful co-existence with them.

These large, powerful animals occasionally damage crops and irrigation equipment.

To avoid large primates entering the cane fields without being harmed, EcoFarm lights fire crackers to frighten them off when they come close to the fields.

Elephants and monkeys are attracted by the irrigation water, so EcoFarm plans to bring water to an isolated area, where wildlife can enjoy a watering hole free from human interference.

Elephants detest bee stings, and actively avoid areas with lots of bees.  EcoFarm plans to suspend a line of bee-hives between the new watering hole and the sugarcane fields, creating a natural barrier.

An added benefit will be new gainful employment for local beekeepers.
