How Food Security is guaranteed

Cooperative members have 100 hectares of cleared and prepared land dedicated to food crops, providing for the basic nutritional needs of the local communities.

In addition, legume crops are planted between the cane rows during the first three months of cane growth each year, taking advantage of irrigation for the sugar cane.

EcoFarm provides seeds and technical advice to help grow lentils, sugar beans, cow peas and other legumes.

Legumes provide proteins for co-operative family diets in a chronically protein-deficient region and provide farmers with additional income.

Legume cultivation also fixes nitrogen in the soils, reducing sugar cane fertilization needs.
